Choosing Plantation Shutter Louvers for Light, Privacy, and Style

1 min readShenandoah Shutters, Richmond VA

Shenandoah offers 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, and 4.5-inch plantation shutter louvers. The size changes the spacing of the horizontal lines across the window and the view between the louvers when open. Compare samples at the window before choosing.

Compare the Three Sizes

  • 2.5-inch louvers: More louvers are needed over a given panel height, creating closer horizontal lines.
  • 3.5-inch louvers: A middle size to compare if you want wider spacing without choosing the largest option.
  • 4.5-inch louvers: Wider spacing gives a more open view between the louvers. The window needs enough clearance for them to turn.

A small window does not automatically need the smallest louver, and a large window does not require the largest. Your preference and the mounting depth both matter.

Check Clearance at the Window

A louver rotates as it opens. The consultant checks the glass, locks, handles, and trim depth so the chosen size can move freely. Casement handles and shallow window openings deserve particular attention.

Consider Privacy and Panel Layout

Louver size is only one part of light control. The angle of the louvers and whether you choose full-height or café panels also affect the view into and out of the room. If you want to adjust upper and lower sections separately, discuss the appropriate layout during measuring.

Look at the Samples in Daylight

Stand where you normally sit or walk through the room. Compare the view through open louvers, then close them and look at the spacing. Check the paint or stain sample beside your trim at the same time.
