Disinfecting Your Home During the Coronavirus Outbreak

1 min readShenandoah Shutters, Richmond VA

This article was first published during the 2020 coronavirus outbreak. Household health guidance has changed since then. For current advice, refer to the CDC’s guidance on cleaning and disinfecting your home.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Are Different

The CDC distinguishes routine cleaning from disinfecting. Regular cleaning is sufficient in many household situations; disinfecting may be needed when someone is sick. Follow the current guidance and the product label, including surface compatibility and contact time.

Choose Care Instructions for the Surface

A product suitable for a countertop may damage a wood finish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each surface rather than applying the same cleaner throughout the home.

Caring for Hardwood Plantation Shutters

For Shenandoah shutters, use a soft cloth for dusting. If marks remain, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and dry the surface afterward. Avoid cleaning agents, furniture polish, and spraying water directly onto the shutters. This is routine finish care, not a disinfecting procedure.

Read our three-step shutter cleaning guide for more detail. If you have a specific concern about the finish or hardware, contact Shenandoah before applying a product.
