Plantation shutters are a permanent architectural feature of your home — they should feel as considered as your trim, cabinetry, and flooring. Getting the finish right is one of the most important decisions in the selection process, and it is easier than most homeowners expect.
The most reliable starting point is your existing window and door trim. Because shutters sit inside or directly adjacent to the trim, they read as part of the same architectural layer. Matching the shutter finish to the trim color creates a seamless, built-in look that makes the shutters feel like they have always been part of the house.
The most popular choice in Richmond-area homes is a clean bright white. If your trim is an off-white or cream, we can match that exactly using our custom paint-matching process.
If you have warm-toned hardwood floors — honey oak, golden pecan, or similar — a pure white shutter can feel stark by contrast. In these rooms, an off-white or linen finish bridges the gap between the warm floor and the cooler wall color. Alternatively, a natural wood stain on the shutters can create a beautiful tonal harmony with the floor.
For cooler-toned floors — grey-washed oak, dark walnut, or painted hardwood — a crisp white shutter is an excellent choice. The contrast is intentional and adds visual clarity to the room.
Painted shutters are the most versatile option and account for the majority of what we install. They are easy to touch up, age gracefully, and work in virtually any interior style from traditional to contemporary.
Stained shutters showcase the natural grain of the wood and work beautifully in rooms with a lot of natural wood — exposed beams, wood-paneled walls, or furniture-forward spaces. We offer a range of stain colors from light natural to dark espresso, and can match existing woodwork in your home.
One detail that trips up many homeowners: undertones. White paint comes in warm (yellow/red undertone) and cool (blue/grey undertone) versions. If your trim is a warm white and you choose a cool white for the shutters, they will look slightly off even though both are technically “white.” Always compare finish samples in the actual room, in the actual light, before making a final decision.
During our in-home consultations, we bring physical finish samples and hold them against your trim, floors, and walls so you can see exactly how they interact before anything is ordered.
While white and off-white dominate, we do install shutters in deeper colors — navy, charcoal, black, and sage green are all options we have done in Richmond homes. These work best as a deliberate design choice in a room where the shutters are meant to be a feature, not a background. Dark shutters against a light wall create a striking architectural moment and photograph beautifully.
When in doubt, match the trim. It is the safest choice and the one that will look intentional and polished regardless of how the rest of the room evolves over time. If you want something more distinctive, bring us a photo of the room and we will walk you through the options that will work best for your specific space.
