Silver Spring’s name comes from the discovery of a spring containing mica, a somewhat silver looking mineral, back in the mid-1800s (by presidential advisor Francis Preston Blair), but you might also recognize its name as the inspiration for the name of the popular Fleetwood Mac song, Silver Springs. In the 1970s, the band’s lead singer, Stevie Nicks, was driving past the town and was so immediately enamored with the town’s name that she based her famous song around the title.
Not only beautiful in name, Silver Spring is a town with history, including that of Acorn Park, where Francis Preston Blair once owned his sprawling mansion after buying the land that became Silver Spring, and beautiful murals that decorate the town and depict its history.
Silver Spring is also filled with plenty of shopping and dining options, as well as community events like the Silver Spring Jazz Festival and Taste the World.
Silver Spring is even home to the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
